The domain name was selected because our house is up on a ridge about 500 feet back
from a busy highway and there is a garden ornament made from the bent remains of a dead cedar tree (see image above).
Below is a video of the fish pond built by Jerry and Sherry
during the summer of 2012.
¤ Sherry enjoys Garden Club
As chair of the Civic Beautification Committee, in 2012 I initiated a new garden project at a public building near our home where it is easy for me to see that the foundation garden has adequate water.
The Club website which I created in 2011 and continue to maintain received a 3rd Place Award from the National Garden Clubs, Inc. at its spring 2012 convention.
A new experience for me was participating in a Flower Show presented by my garden club in September 2012. I was encouraged to do a basket that was one of 4 displayed on an open deck. My basket (shown here) received 3rd place.
Of the horticulture exhibits I entered in the Flower Show, many 1st place honors were awarded, and a Collector's Ribbon was won for my conifers exhibit.
¤ Jerry enjoys hiking
and woodworking
Jerry finished accumulating his long-distance hiking equipment in 2011 and spent 4 days in mid-October hiking a part of the Appalachian Trail which can be accessed after a short drive from our home. He did 28 miles total over some pretty steep terrain, enduring some minor physical pains that lingered a week or so.
Having concluded that a 45 lb. backpack is too heavy, he has been experimenting on 5 mile hikes at a local nature center during the latter part of 2012 using a 'simulated' pack of only 35 lbs.
A plus is that he is building up body strength and stamina.
Jerry continues to add woodworking equipment to his basement workshop and enjoys building items for the house and garden. In 2011 he finished shelving for recycle materials and auto/home cleaning supplies. During 2012 he built a portable table with storage drawers for a heavy piece of woodworking equipment.
¤ Jerry and Sherry build
a pond
After months of research, taking measurements and making drawings, Jerry finished the design for a fish pond to be built at the base of the boardwalk entry to our screened back porch. With stone we selected and had delivered from a local stoneyard, we began building the pond in late May 2012. Working through some temperatures in the 90's during the summer, we completed the pond in October.
Taking our time, making some design changes as we went, we worked only 3 days a week and not more than 2 hours each day. Very pleased with the completed project, we feel we could never have gotten the same satisfactory results using a contractor.
Below are still photos of finished pond. Pictures of the building process appear on the PropertyImprovements page.
¤ Sherry hosts Garden Tour
For Garden Club members and their guests, I conducted a tour of my home garden in the spring of 2012. This was one of the Club's activities scheduled during Garden Week in Georgia. See photos below.
