Creating a Habitat

One of the joys of living in a less urban area is the abundance of wildlife. Because they give us so much pleasure, we try to supply all wildlife, especially birds, with what they need to thrive...food, water, cover and nesting sites. We provide bird feeders, water dishes and birdhouses. Dead trees, unless a hazard, are left standing for use by woodpeckers. Brush piles are made from downed limbs to make homes for wrens, chipmunks, snakes and box turtles.

Originally, all creatures were welcome, including a large family of deer. However, because of the frustration in trying to get plantings established and grown to a mature size when they were constantly grazed by deer, a wildlife fence was installed in summer 2011 to encourage these lovely creatures to dine elsewhere.

The pictures above were copied from a wildlife website.

Here are some wildlife that regularly visit our feeders or grounds.

We are especially pleased that several species of hawk nest in our woods
and frequently perch on trees near the house.
Hawk on bluebird box below is a red-shouldered hawk.

A butterfly garden was created just to attract gorgeous creatures such as those below.
